Chelsea have won the Europa League after beating Arsenal 4-1 in Baku, with Eden Hazard scoring twice after goals from Olivier Giroud and Pedro in a second-half salvo.
After a tentative first half, Giroud connected to Emerson Palmieri’s cross in the 49th minute, steering his header beyond Petr Cech to give Chelsea the lead. Maurizio Sarri’s side doubled their lead on the hour as Pedro met Hazard’s cross and swept the ball into the far corner.
With Arsenal reeling, Chelsea added a third just five minutes later. Ainsley Maitland-Niles clumsily hauled Giroud down in the area and Hazard stepped up to convert the penalty, leaving Arsenal’s hopes of silverware and a Champions League place in tatters.
Alex Iwobi scored with a spectacular volley to give Unai Emery’s side brief hope, but Hazard struck in the 72nd minute. The Belgian finished from Giroud’s cross to ensure victory on what may prove to be his final Chelsea appearance.
Chelsea have now won five major European trophies, adding this season’s Europa League to the 2012-13 trophy, the 2011-12 Champions League and two Cup Winners’ Cup successes.
